Hello! My name is Megan Marquardt and I am a studio arts graduate. In addition to art, I also played flute for 8 years in school and performed in multiple honor groups and two school musicals as first chair flute/piccolo. I am also a writer and have written around 30 short fictional stories. My goal is to become a video game artist that works in concept art and character design in both 2D and (more recently) 3D. A lot of my works are inspired by my love of daydreaming, thus making a lot of my works fantasy-themed. I hope to create that same feeling of imagination and wonder in my works that I get whenever I find myself daydreaming of distant lands and fantastical characters.
Formal Artist Statement:
The world is filled with a diversity of people and I want to learn about those who express themselves differently than myself. When I create my work, I depict the subjects of my art in a fantasy setting which allows me to avoid the stereotypes that shape beauty standards and gender roles. My subjects are not reduced to their outward characteristics, allowing them to be acknowledged beyond the ways in which they have been labeled. I create works where my subjects are allowed to be who they are. In addition, the fantasy elements I add to my work also help to further showcase different identities and how one sees oneself. As individuals, the identity we have of ourselves in our mind might not be reflected through our outward appearance. A person has more freedom to imagine who they want to be in the mind’s eye as opposed to what they are capable of showing through the physical self. How we see ourselves is different than how the world sees us. However, art can be used to more accurately represent the real self by allowing an individual to bypass the rules limiting the physical self. Art is a way to express what words cannot say.
